River Landscape with Cottages and Trees

Oil on panel. 34.5 x 54.5 cm.
Monogrammed and dated lower left (on the boat): VG 163 [?].

This river landscape, rendered in subtle shades of green, dates from the early 1630s. It is a characteristic example of a type of landscape developed contemporaneously by Jan van Goyen, Salomon van Ruysdael and Pieter de Molijn that uses a monochrome colour palette and a low horizon line. The quiet, almost contemplative mood of the painting is enlivened by several buildings, including a windmill in the distance, as well as a variety of figures.
