Bartolomeo Castelli the Younger, called. Lo Spadino

Fruit Still Life with Pumpkin, Peaches and Grapes

Oil on canvas (relined). 48.5 x 99 cm.

We would like to thank Professor Alberto Cottino for attributing this previously unpublished painting to Bartolomeo Castello the Younger. In his opinion, it represents an interesting addition to the œuvre of this Roman still-life painter. Elements such as the peaches and the cut pumpkin appear almost identically in other paintings by him.
Bartolomeo Castelli came from a Roman family of still life painters and was certainly one of the most famous artists of his time. He was collected by Roman noble families such as the Spada, who owned twelve of his works. His paintings are generally more intimate and delicate in colouring than those of his uncle Giovanni Battista Castelli, who was also nicknamed "Spadino".
