After working for the porcelain manufactory in Kassel from 1769 onwards, Johann Georg Pforr entered the painter's academy in Kassel in 1778 and became a pupil of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder, whose daughter Johanna Christiane he married in 1784. Pforr's special interest was the depiction of animals and especially horses; this later earned him the nickname of the "German Wouwerman". Having moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1781, Pforr achieved great recognition among the contemporary public.
