A figure of the Virgin and Child, Mechelen, around 1500

Carved from a single piece of wood, three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. With presumably original older polychromy and gilding, the plinth overpainted. Finely carved figure designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint, depicting the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose and holding the Christ Child with a book in Her arms. The design of the figure, especially of the facial features, points to an origin in Mechelen.
Wear with minor losses, especially to the left side of the crown and the plinth. Height 26.5 cm.
