Lucas van Leyden, copy after

The Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa

Oil on panel. 21 x 15.5 cm.

The composition of the present panel is probably based on a diptych by Lucas van Leyden, whose counterpart was a depiction of Christ as the Man of Sorrows. The composition of the diptych, which can no longer be traced today, is known from an engraving made in around 1600 with the monogram L and the date 1522. The image of the Madonna can already be found on an older woodcut attributed to Lucas van Leyden.
In addition to the present work, there are other oil paintings based on these models in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-1484) and in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (inv. no. WAG 1185).
