This depiction of St. Jerome is a copy after a lost composition by Rembrandt, preserved in an inverted engraving by Jan Gillisz. van Vliet and in a number of copies. These include one by Gerrit Dou (formerly Erns Museum, Budapest) and one by Franz Reicher from the late 17th century (formerly Ossilinski Collection, Lviv), An impressive red chalk drawing by Rembrandt depicting the figure of the penitent Jerome has also survived.
