A.R. Penck

Ich in London 1
1982

Acrylic on canvas. 101 x 122 cm. Framed. Signed and dated 'ar penck 82'. - Minor traces of age.

This painting by A.R. Penck was created two years after the East German authorities had cancelled his citizenship. His move to West Germany was accompanied by a change in style, as his paintings became freer and less constrained: “The change in imagery and technique after Penck's move to the West in 1980 was partly due to his wider scope in terms of colour and material. After his reduced use of resources and sparing application of acrylic latex in East Germany, he started to use oil and acrylic extremely extravagantly. The very act of painting was now important, and as it became possible to overpaint, to change and to deconstruct a painting, he began to create relief-like surfaces and opted for an impasto brushstroke.” (Ingrid Pfeiffer, Ein bekannter Unbekannter, Aktuelle Blicke auf A.R. Penck, in: Ingrid Pfeiffer and Max Hollein (ed.), A.R. Penck, Retrospektive, exhib.cat. Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt et al., Dusseldorf 2007, p.47).
