Emil Nolde

Trauernde (Theaterszene)
1910/1911

Watercolour and black India ink on fine Japan paper. 19.2 x 12.7 cm. Framed under glass. Signed 'Nolde' lower right in black ink. - Very good condition. Firmly mounted in mat verso in the corners.

The work is from the series of watercolours of theatre scenes which Nolde created in the winter of 1910/11 during the performances at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin after productions by Max Reinhardt. The present sheet perhaps shows a scene from Goethe’s “Faust”. Not immediately recognisable, Nolde depicts here a seated female bent forward and resting her head on her folded arms.
