Ernst Wilhelm Nay
Prometheus I
1948
Gouache and watercolour over pencil on watercolour paper. 20.6 x 24.5 cm. Framed under glass. Signed and dated 'Nay 48' lower right in black. - The paper somewhat browned, verso with fragments of old mounting.
'Prometheus I' – as lot 228 – is a good example of his work of the post-war years. Nay found himself fin Le Mans and often worked in small format. Here the colour accents of red and white prevail, spherical elements are scattered over the picture surface, and complement each other almost tonally to form a whole. The strokes become looser; he works with an aperspectival pictorial space.
