Mack began with his so-called dynamic structures in 1956. In terms of colour, they are reduced to black and white to accentuate the form of the structures even more through the light-dark contrast. In the work offered here, two parallel structural tracks running across the white pictorial space are reminiscent of frequency measurements with their vibrating jagged deflections. In fact, they thematise the dynamic of light, the rhythmic pulsation of which the artist translates into serial, yet slightly irregular sequences. The immaterial, fleeting quality inherent in light acquires an impressive, powerful presence in “Dynamische Struktur Schwarz auf Weiß” and evokes the impression of shimmering movement.
In 1957, Heinz Mack was co-founder of the pioneering artist group ZERO; it strove for a new, quiet art in which light, movement and space were connected in a pristine, purist aesthetic. The work group of the structure pictures thus emerged in an intensive period of experimentation. As well as the classical medium of the canvas picture used here, the artist also increasingly made use of unconventional media and created sculptural and kinetic works such as vibrating light reliefs and monumental light stelae.
