A very large shallow tochi wood and urushi bowl by Ninjo Yoshikatsu. 1990s

With a curved wall and a flat rim and a wide foot ring. Cut from the trunk in yokogiri itame, turned and lacquered.
Height 8.6 cm; diameter 46.2 cm

Ninjo Yoshikatsu was born in Korea in 1944 and returned to Japan with his family two years later. They settled in Ibara, Okayama prefecture, where Ninjo still lives. For his large plates, bowls and tiered boxes he mostly uses the wood of the Japanese horse-chestnut and covers it thinly with urushi so that the beautiful wood grain remains visible.
