A yosegi-zaiku traveling writing desk. Late Edo period

A rectangular panel and two small cabinets, the left one with four drawers, the right one with one drawer and a door above, can be put together to form a writing desk. The front of the cabinets and the panel with large asymmetrical inlays of different kinds of woods with small geometric patterns. Chiseled fittings and handles (seven out of nine missing) of silvery metal. Black and red lacquer to the inside. Inside at the back twice the large character “mura” in ink, probably referring to the maker’s name. Traces of use. Along with a small box in mokuzôgan.
Measurements when closed: height 28 cm; width 36.7 cm; depth 25.5 cm; when open width 75.5 cm

According to Kaneko, these travelling desks were used by daimyô and high-ranking persons when traveling in their sedan chairs.
