A very large bronze lantern. Edo period, 19th century

The hexagonal base with six panels filled with shishis and peonies in relief is surmounted by a shaft encircled by a dragon which supports a lotus and a base with six panels filled with dragons. The spherical body above subdivided into six panels with openwork scrolls and five aoi-mon (two of them missing) topped by a roof with up-turned eaves and with three of the originally six dragon heads with flaming tongues fitted with small pendant bells. Surface weathering and entirely covered by verdigris.

Private collection, Stuttgart, according to the consignor presented to Erwin Bälz (1849-1913), physician-in-waiting to the Imperial household during his sojourn in Japan from 1876 to 1905
