A cupid's head

Softwood, carved in the round, painted and gilded. The painting retouched. H 20.5 cm.
Munich, 1760s / 1770s.

This putto head has traditionally been attributed to the workshop of Ignaz Günther. However, it could also be attributed to Joseph Götsch (1728 - 1793), who created similar figures. Comparable facial features can be observed in the child from the guardian angel group in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Rott am Inn, dated 1763 - 66.
