Literature

Cf. Ottomeyer/Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich 1986, illus. 3.8.1., for an identical example in Nymphenburg palace, also signed "Gille l'aîné".
For this maker see Tardy, Dictionnaire des horlogers français, Paris 3/1972, p. 256. The signature probably refers to Pierre Gilles l'aîné, who apprenticed under Pierre Le Roy and became a master himself in 1746.
