Francesco Cozza, born in southern Calabria, moved to Rome at a young age, where he trained in the workshop of Domenichino. Like his teacher, he also devoted himself primarily to religious and mythological history painting. But there are also so-called landscapes with small figures by him - paesi con figure piccole - like the present painting with its strongly Roman-influenced landscape style.
