Probably Burgundy ca. 1390/1410

A stone figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Burgundy, circa 1390/1410

Carved in the round and partially freestanding. Extensive remains of uniform older polychromy. A depiction of the Virgin Mary designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds the infant Christ, who in turn holds a bird in His hands, to one side over Her hip and a lily in Her extended right hand. The Virgin is clothed in a veil, a floor-length girded gown and a richly draped cloak. The design of the figure points towards an origin in Eastern France or Burgundy, and the gently swaying S-form pose speaks for a date of around 1400.
The end of the lily stem presumably lost. Minor wear throughout. Two drilled holes in the tops of the heads. Height 92 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Switzerland.
