A carved oak relief of the Lamentation, Lower Rhine Region, around 1520

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Depicting the Virgin Mary seated on an unornamented bench, holding the body of Her dead Son, clothed in a perizonium, in Her lap. To the right, She is accompanied by a figure in contemporary fashionable clothing, presumably Mary Magdalene.
With vertical hairline cracks, especially to the plinth. Minor wear throughout. Height 37 cm.
