Signed lower right: Spitzweg, estate stamp.

This portrait-format piece shows a thick old beech tree with planks of wood leaning up to dry against its trunk on the right. Spitzweg notes in his diary in 1835 "Painted a beech tree with large planks on one side...". Spitzweg had studied botany for several semesters at Munich University and was keen to depict plants and trees as realistically as possible.
