Johann Jakob Biedermann
View of Freiburg seen from the North
Oil on canvas. 61 x 81 cm.
Signed and dated lower centre: J.J. Biedermann f. 1822.
Johann Jacob Biedermann is one of the most important Swiss landscape and veduta painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He created a widely disseminated series of prints with 30 views of Swiss towns and villages as early as 1796. Since then, topographically identifiable landscapes remained a constant in his oeuvre.
Biedermann first lived in Lausanne, Geneva, Zurich, Paris and Frankfurt before settling in the town of Constance in 1802, where - with brief interruptions - he spent the majority of his life. He only returned to Switzerland in 1824.
This view of Freiburg, dated 1822, can be considered one of his major works from his most creative period, the mature years in Constance. He chose a location to the north of the city for this view, in which the famous Gothic cathedral is backed by mountains, including Schönberg. The view opens onto the Rhine river valley on the right and in the foreground, the composition is framed by a large oak tree on the left, and on the right by steep hill with a vineyard, cultivated with diligence and care.
The fertile landscape of the Breisgau region shines in a warm, late summer light. Farmers at work and a young mother complement the peaceful mood of this picture. Thus, like the entire oeuvre of Johann Jacob Biedermann, it is in harmony with the romantic post-classical art of his time, especially that of Wilhelm von Kobell or the later Hackert.
The painting is in an immaculate state of preservation and housed in the original frame from the period.
