Alongside Hubert Salentin, Ernst Bosch is one of the most popular representatives of the narrative painting of the Düsseldorf School. After his first attempts at painting as a pupil in Krefeld, Bosch studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1851 to 1856 under Ferdinand Sohn, Theodor Hildebrandt and Wilhelm von Schadow. After graduating, he settled in Düsseldorf as a freelance painter and took up various positions in the city's artistic circles, such as the Verein freischaffender Künstler, the Kunstverein and the Künstlerverein Malkasten.
It is possible that the title of the present painting goes back to Bosch himself. A similar painting is known as "Der angehende Michelangelo" (formerly Galerie Paffrath, Düsseldorf).
