Friedrich Paul was the son of Friedrich Nerly, whose artistic talent he obviously inherited. He moved to Rome in around 1868, to which the handwritten label on the reverse of our painting refers. From there he undertook numerous trips to southern Italy, including Sicily. This painting shows Monte Pellegrino on the north coast of Sicily, not far from Palermo, which has been an important place of pilgrimage since the 17th century. Goethe described it as "the most beautiful promontory in the world".
