Ferdinand Brütt

Study for the Painting "Bridal Procession"

Oil on canvas. 69 x 56 cm.
Signed lower left: Ferd. Brütt.

The significant alterations made to parts of this work show it to be a study for the painting "Brautzug" (Bridal Procession), the whereabouts of which are currently unknown (cf. exhib. cat. "Ferdinand Brütt (1849-1936) - Erzählung und Impression", Museum Giersch, Frankfurt, 18.3.-15.7. 2007, Petersberg 2007, p. 24, illus. 6, and p. 25 & 203). Brütt painted this Rococo scene during his early years in Düsseldorf. Three years prior to this he painted another work, also currently lost, depicting the same staircase with different figures (cf. exhib. cat. "Ferdinand Brütt" op. cit. p. 202, illus. 80).
