Unknown Artist late 19th cenbtury
Portrait of Sir Edwin Landseer
Oil on card. 25 x 19 cm.
Alongside Scottish landscapes, Sir Edwin Landseer RA (1802-1873) primarily painted depictions of animals, in particular dogs. He also worked as a sculptor and designed, among other things, the bronze lions at the base of Nelson's Column in London's Trafalgar Square.
This portrait of the English painter is based on a photograph taken around 1867 by two English portrait photographers, the brothers John Watkins (1823-1874) and Octavius Charles Watkins (1836-1882).
