There is a distinct energy which emanates from Isshaq Ismails’s paintings. The large eyes, the bold clash of colours and pastose paint application led to an explosion of colour and feelings. Having grown up in Accra, the capital of Ghana, Ismail’s portraits are very much a resonance of the people he encountered on his journeys through the busy city. Born in 1989 and having studies at the acclaimed Ghanatta College of Art and Design from 2009-2012, his works have been exhibited in both Ghana and internationally, including in New York, Miami, London, Cape Town, and Dubai. In 2015 and 2016, he was shortlisted for the Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Art; and in 2019, he was shortlisted for the GUBA USA Influential Artist Award.
