A stag antler kiseruzutsu. Second half 19th century

Of senryû-zutsu type. Carved with a mother shishi, who has thrown two young ones off the top of a cliff in order to test their courage and endurance when climbing up again. Signed Sôzan in an oval reserve.
Length 19.4 cm

According to Henri Joly the ritual shishi no saka otoshi was meant to test the young shishis' vitality. If they survive the fall from the top of a cliff, they were destined to live a long life.
