A Berlin enamel snuff box with battle scenes

Rectangular box with gilt copper mountings. Decorated on four sides and on the lid with purple scale pattern, the lid with a depiction of Mars, the god of war, surrounded by trophies before a military encampment. The inside of the lid painted with a courtly lady with a fan. Unmarked. Minor wear, the mountings slightly loose, a small soldered repair below the hinge. H 3.7, W 8.5, D 6.4 cm.
Attributed to Alexander Fromery manufactory, early 1760s.

The Fromery manufactory's coloured enamel boxes were among the the most famous products to be made in Berlin, and were distributed throughout Europe. The trained goldsmith Pierre Fromery (1679 - 1738) specialised in the production of enamelled copper with gold plating. He founded a large distribution company for fancy goods (brushes, tobacco boxes, flasks), which was taken over by his son Alexander after his death.
