Bust of a Bearded Man
by Carl Cauer (1828 - 1885)

Life-sized Classical style bust in white Carrara marble. Signed "C. Cauer. Roma. 1874." on the reverse. H 61.5, W c. 40 cm.
Rome, 1874.

This unidentified portrait was made by the sculptor Carl Ludwig Cauer, born in Bonn in 1828, the elder brother of Robert Cauer the Elder. After training in Berlin with Christian Daniel Rauch and Albert Wolff, he went to study in Rome and later in London. He had his own studio in Bad Kreuznach, but also worked in the studio of his brother Robert in Rome. Carl Cauer was known for his portraits. He had only a few larger commissions for monuments.
