Alongside Antoine Pesne, in whose studio he worked for 15 years, Falbe was the most important Berlin portrait painter of his time. He became court painter to the Prince of Anhalt-Köthen in 1739, and a member of the Berlin Academy in 1764. Pesne held his former pupil Falbe in such high esteem that in 1757, on his deathbed, he entrusted him with the completion of all the portraits he had left unfinished.
