A chair
after a design by Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856 - 1934)

Solid oak, stained brown, oiled (?), replaced wicker upholstery to the seat and backrest. H 105, W 46, seat depth 45 cm.
Amsterdam, attributed to Hillen & Roosen, around/after 1903.

The chair is based on a model for a dining room that Hendrik Petrus Berlage produced for the exhibition in Turin in 1902. These chairs are now in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Inv. BK-1975-72-H). The chair presented here has some modifications such as the round legs at the front, the two columnar back struts and the crenellations at the top of the backrest. Berlage had his designs realised in the factory of Johannes Baptista Hillen (1877 - 1947), which was possibly also responsible for the production of this piece.

Provenance

From an important European private collection.
