A German 14k gold and carved teak wood brooch.

Designed as a stylised eye engraved "Sei wachsam" (be watchful) and a teak wood eye with a carved pupil. Hallmarks: Fineness 585, maker's mark "whale with waves". L 5 cm. Weight 8.28 g.

The German expression "wooden eye be watchful", which reminds one to keep one's eyes peeled, is probably derived from the carpenter's trade. When planing wood, there is always a danger of slipping off the wooden eyes, which are harder than the rest of the wood.
