An Etruscan Revival granulation and filigree work disc brooch.

Round brooch decorated with wire filigree and granulation in the archaeological revival style. The centre with a rosette framed by concentric bands of ornament. Applied relief signature "PIERRET". Minor losses to the granulation. Diameter 3.0 cm. Weight 8.52 g.
Ernesto Pierret, Rome, around 1860/70.

The Frenchman Ernesto Pierret (born Paris 1824) went to Rome as a young man and trained there as a goldsmith. In 1846 he opened his own shop, offering archaeological revival jewellery of the highest quality, which is why it is assumed that he had previously spent some time in the Roman workshop of the Castellani. John Murray described him in his "Handbook to Central Italy and Rome" in 1853 as "one of the first artists in Rome for Etruscan jewellery".
