Reyer Claesz., called Suycker

Panoramic Landscape with the Discovery of the Beaker of Benjamin

Oil on canvas, relined. 79.5 x 126 cm.
Monogrammed lower right (on one of the sacks): R C.

Reyer Claesz, called Suycker, is recorded as resident in Haarlem from 1620 onwards. This painting, with the artist's characteristic monogram RC, shows a spacious landscape with mighty trees and two towns in the middle ground. The biblical scene takes place in the foreground, as if on a stage. It shows a scene from Gen. 44:1-12: After Joseph had been sold by his brothers to Egypt, he rose there to become the chief administrator of the land. When his brothers came to Egypt during a famine to buy grain, Joseph hid a golden cup in the sack of his youngest brother Benjamin. Our picture shows the finding of the cup by Pharaoh's soldiers.
