Pandolfo Reschi, attributed to

Spaniel in a Landscape

Oil on canvas (relined). 50.6 x 60.7 cm.

This northern European artist fully trained in Italy, in Rome and Florence, is mainly known as battle painter. He also painted still lifes and, according to his biographer Baldinucci, “animali di ogni sorte”. A scarce number of depictions of animals can be identified nowadays: the present composition shows striking similarities with the canvases by Pandolfo Reschi today housed in the Villa Medicea at Poggio a Caiano.

Provenance

William Sandford, purchased in Rome, 1822 (according to an old label on the relining canvas). - Auctioned by Christie's, London, 25.4.2001, lot 114 (as circle of Baldassare de Caro). - Sale, Sotheby´s, London, 10.12.2009, lot 205 (as attributed to Arcangelo Resani). - Acquired there by the present owner.
