Southern Capriccio with Fort, Ruins and Figures

Monogrammed and dated lower right: IVH (conjoined) 1706 (barely legible).

This southern landscape has traditionally been attributed to Jan van der Heyden, as can be seen from the label on the reverse. Characteristic of this Dutch painter is above all the meticulous treatment of the masonry, the harmonious distribution of light and the diagonal perspective of the picture. Fanciful southern landscapes such as this are rarer in his oeuvre than Dutch and German city views. The painting is not listed in Pieter C. Sutten's catalogue raisonné.
