Portrait of a Lady at a Window with a Book (Lady Herder)

Oil on panel. 23.6 x 18.2 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: J. P. van Horstock fecit / 1780.

A label on the reverse reveals the name of the sitter, "De Weledele Vrouwe Herder" (the noble lady Herder). With the depiction of the woman in a window, Horstock draws on a popular motif of the Dutch golden age. Horstock became known above all for his rustic interior scenes.
