Carl Friedrich Hetsch was one of the most interesting artistic personalities in Stuttgart around 1800. Close friends with the sculptor Danneker and with Schiller, he was also one of the most sought-after painters at the Württemberg court. After stays in Paris, where he had been a pupil of Joseph-Marie Vien and Joseph Vernet, and a trip to Rome, he gained the reputation of being one of the most important painters of German Classicism.
