This early landscape painting by Eugène Verboeckhoven is impressive for its format and painterly quality, as well as for its exceptionally good condition. Verboeckhoven takes the encounter of a man with a shepherdess and her flocks as an occasion to depict an abundance of animals and a landscape bathed in the warm light of the evening sun. The large format in particular reveals the quality of the clear, porcelain-like, luminous application of paint; the depiction of flora and fauna reflects the long Netherlandish, but also English, painting tradition which the artist studied in his younger years.
