Constant Montald

Two Ladies in Byzantine Attire

Tempera and gold pigment on card. 89 x 70 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: C. Montald / 20..

This scene of two women in Byzantine-Classical garb is imbued with a dreamy mood that is characteristic of many works by the Belgian symbolist painter Montald. His early interest in the mosaics of Ravenna and Venice, but also in Italian Renaissance painting, is palpable in this lyrical figure painting. At the same time, the influences of foliate Jugendstil ornament are noticeable. Typical for Montald are the use of tempera and gold pigments as well as the matt surfaces of his paintings, stylistic elements that we also encounter in his monumental decorative compositions.
