An ivory model of a turtle stela. Around 1900

A mythic tortoise functions as the base of a stela displaying a meditating monk underneath a canopy on one side and an excerpt from the Prajnaparamita Sutra on the other side, the stela is topped by two entwined dragons. Remains of red and blue-green pigments to the tortoise and gold to the engraved lines.
Height 22.4 cm

Such ivory models must have enjoyed great popularity. The turtle would have more or less always been worked out the same whereas the stele itself shows different motifs and inscriptions. Stelae with various inscriptions erected in the tomb halls of the Ming and Qing emperors served as models for those models.
