The meeting of Emperor Xuanzong and the poet Li Bai

Cut out from a hanging roll. Ink and colours on silk, painted in Song style. Emperor Minghuang surrounded by his concubine Yang Yuhuan with two maids and Li Bai kneeling before him. Inscribed Zhou Tianqiu and four seals (illegible).

Depicted is probably the scene when Li Bai, one of the China's most important poets of the Tang dynasty, first met the Emperor Minghuang at his imperial court. Emperor Minghuang was so impressed by Li Bai's talents that he gave Li Bai a soup as a reward, which he had spiced and stirred himslef. Li Bai kneed down in front of the Emperor and thanked him.
