An Ido type chawan. Edo period

Of conical shape and with a strong foot ring, the body covered with a very thin whitish glaze seeming applied with a brush, inside the well six spur marks. Chips to the rim and cracks repaired in gold lacquer (kintsugi). Wooden box, the lid inscribed Hakeme (in hiragana) and I; old paper label inscribed in Latin script Chawan Mishima Hakeme with the initials EG (= Ernst Grosse); at one side of the box a Japanese paper label inscribed with numbers 26949 und in kanji: Hakeme (...) chawan. Silk cloth.
Height 9 cm; diameter 13.7 cm

The wooden box of the chawan comes with a paper label inscribed "Mishima Hakeme" and with the initials "EG" on the top left of its lid. These distinctively written letters are attributed to the ethnologist and collector Ernst Grosse (1862-1927). It is known that Grosse’s widow gave Tikotin art objects for sale in 1930. Box and chawan probably came into Tikotin’s possession in this way.

Provenance

From the estates of Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) and Louis (Loek) Borensztajn (1935-2021)
