A large shallow dish. Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. 1950s/1960s

Reserved from the brown/black glaze a stylized plant. Wooden box, the reverse of the lid inscribed Tetsuyûbatsu e-sara (iron-glazed painted dish) and signed Shôji and sealed Shô (= Hamada Shôji, 1894-1978). Yellow wrapping cloth sealed Shô.

Hamada Shôji is regarded as one of the most important and influential Japanese potters of the 20th century and as a co-founder of the Mingei-movement that emerged in 1926. In 1955, he was made a "Living National Treasure" for his services and awarded the Imperial Order of Culture in 1968. From 1961 until his death in 1978, he directed the Museum of Japanese Folk Art in Tokyo.
