An ivory netsuke of Benkei sitting in a bell. Second half 19th century

Taking a rest inside the bell of Miidera and smoking a pipe, after having carried the bell up Mount Hiei where the sound of the bell was to please the monks living there. The surface of the bell shows all the typical characteristics of a Buddhist bronze bell.
