An Umbrian cross with a relic of Monsignore Cosmo Perbenedetti

Boxwood, coloured paper appliques, gilt wire, glass, red wax, paper. Carved in three parts: The tiered moulded base, a cross on a bracket flanked by reeds and a vertical handle on the reverse. With an oval aperture for the relic in the centre framed by seven winged angel's heads. Richly carved with Neoclassical foliate decor. H 38.5, W 19.5, D 10.4 cm.
Around 1778.

This superbly carved table or altar cross was made to hold the relic of Monsignor Cosmo Perbenedetti. Perbenedetti was bishop of the city of Terni in the Umbria region from 1748 to 1767.

Hidden in the foot of the cross is a small drawer containing a document in Latin signed by Bishop Agostino Felice De Rossi (1722 - 1788) in 1778, who succeeded Perbenedetti in 1768. This document certifies the authenticity of the relic.
