The painting is not listed by Bettina Werche (B. Werche: Hendrik van Balen. An Antwerp Cabinet Painter of the Rubens Period, 2004).
The attribution to van Balen goes back to the important German-American art historian Wilhelm Reinhold Valentiner (1880 Karlsruhe - 1954 New York). Valentiner was the director of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum and the founding director of the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
