With its brisk brushwork and fresh and bright colours, this decorative painting fully encapsulates the style of the great Antwerp Baroque painter Frans Snyders. An almost identical painting "Basket with Songbirds and Grapes" by Snyders from a Belgian private collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in 1984 (see Hella Robels, Frans Snyders, Stilleben- und Tiermaler, 1579-1657, p. 250, with illustration).
