This pastel drawing shows a detail from the portrait of Marie Adélaïde of Savoy, Duchess of Burgundy, painted by Jean Baptiste Santerre in 1709 (see ill. 1). The detail even includes the royal cloak of Louis XV's mother. In addition to large and imposing portraits for the Versailles court, Santerre also created smaller half-length works. His pieces are characterised by a pronounced interest in fanciful costumes and the meticulous rendering of materials and textures.
