Francis van Bossuit, attributed to

A carved ivory figure of Hercules, attributed to Francis van Bossuit

Carved in the round and partially pierced. This figure of Hercules, carved in the round, shows him standing in contrapposto with his club shouldered, holding in his left hand the skin of the Nemean lion, which falls to his feet on the reverse of the figure. The small, finely carved sculpture is traditionally attributed to the Flemish artist Francis van Bossuit, who, after his training in Brussels in 1655-1660, went to Italy to study the works of François Duquesnoy and Bernini. Returning north to Amsterdam, he specialised in small-format ivory objects for private collectors' cabinets of curiosities.
Some short vertical hairline cracks. Two small drilled holes to the back of the head and shoulders. Slightly yellowed. Mounted on an ivory veneered wooden plinth. Height 13.5 cm (with plinth).
