Jacob Philipp Hackert
View of Castello di Capraia
Pencil and pen in brown. 52.7 x 74.9 cm.
Framed under glass.
Signed and dated lower centre: La Capraia, Veduta da San Mingatello / Filippo Hackert f. 1800.
The drawing was made after Hackert fled to Florence from Naples via Livorno and Pisa, and settled there in 1800. As he did in other regions, the artist hiked and drew the surrounding countryside immediately upon his arrival. The view sketched here extended out from the small village of Samminiatello across the Arno and into the hilly landscape of Tuscany beyond. The large-format sheet remained in Hackert's possession. His estate went to his brother-in-law Friedrich Christian Behrend, who had the inherited works of art brought from Florence to Berlin. A total of 32 drawings from this source ended up in the collection of Princess Karoline Luise of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, of Duke Carl August (1757-1828), including this sheet and the previous lot. The second daughter of Grand Duke Carl August (1757-1828) in Weimar had a particular interest in drawings and was in close contact with Goethe, who in turn was known to hold Jakob Philipp Hackert in high esteem.
